From the Robin Wood deck

There seem to be two contrasting interpretations of this card. The determining factor is this: Is the man on the card scanning the horizon to see his ships coming in, or is he preparing to embark on a journey?

He is linked to the Empress, the embodiment of creative growth, and as a Wand, he is the Yang within her Yin.

Since his predecessor, the Two, blends Yin and Yang equally as ‘the breath before the first step,’ the Three cannot be read as the preparation for a journey.

Instead, echoing the fertility of the Empress, I think this card tells of satisfactory results to an enterprise – literally, those ships coming in. The risk – which is what any act of creation ultimately embodies – pays off.
