From the Robin Wood deck

This card reminds me of a very dark time in my life, when I couldn’t put my head down on my pillow without feeling the panic rising. I refer of course to the weeks after John left.

So I feel I know the 9 Swords well, and it is about mental anguish and torment, doubt, confusion, catastrophising.

It is ruled by the Hermit, the card of solitude and introspection and, when you’re alone, especially in the night, that’s when your thoughts turn against you and the panic rises.

The 9 Swords is about the Long Dark Night of the Soul, an inevitable aspect of the Hermit’s lesson. And, like so many of the Swords, it is in its Reversed aspect that we see the wisdom of the Hermit calming those terrors of the night and accessing the light of hope.
